Welcome to the Mineral Wiki page. This assignment gives you a chance to learn about one of the minerals we will be identifying in class. You also get to collaborate with students from other classes that have the same topic as you.

This assignment is due Jan 5th.

ASSIGNMENT #1
Part 1
  • First, go to the discussion section and introduce yourself to your team. Tell them a little about yourself as well as any ideas you may have about your page. The discussion board is a good place to share resources and ideas. Think about how you want your page to look (make it pretty, impress me, get a good grade). Remember, I want you to use your imagination; Be creative and have fun. If I wanted to read some boring information with an occasional picture I would go to Wikipedia. Although this is called a "wiki" it shouldn't be a copy of a Wikipedia page but something interesting to look at that shows your personality.

Part 2
  • Start looking for information. *Remember CRAAP* Post good resources you find on your discussion board for your team members to use. You need to keep track of all the source information: titles of books and web sites, writers' names, dates, cities of publication, Internet domains, web page sponsors, etc. You might keep all this in the "Resources" section. You will be responsible for a Works Cited on the wiki, and it has to indicate where you got your information, your graphics, and anything else that you didn't create from scratch.
  • Remember that you can come back to this wiki any time (from home) to work on it or see what your team members have done. This does not have to be done all during class time.
  • Remember that you need to share the labor: Everyone must contribute...and we can see who has done what.


Any changes to pages or discussions are emailed to me and kept in the wiki's history by user name. I know who does stuff and who doesn't. These are the things you will be graded on -

Information:
  • Your information should be accurate and from reliable sources
  • All the information should be in YOUR OWN WORDS. Nothing should be copied and pasted. This will get you a crummy grade.
  • At least one section of your page should include good technical information about the mineral, nothing cutesy. (other parts can and should be cutesy)
  • *NEW* You page must include at least 6 key terms or definitions of technical terms or words you don't understand
  • Everything needs to be cited correctly at the bottom of the page. Citations should be in the correct format. You should use this website to format your citations: Citation Machine
  • You need to at least have 6 resources. One of these has to be something other than the internet
  • HEY! Use correct punctuation and grammar for Pete's sake. You will be graded on your ability to communicate properly. This isn't a dang text message or your wall on Facebook. Arrgh! You're making me go balder....

Content:
Your page should include the following things about your mineral:
  • Name (origins, if any)
  • Group Name
  • Chemical Composition
  • Crystal Shape
  • Luster
  • Hardness
  • Streak
  • Cleavage
  • How it forms
  • How do you identify it or tell it from other minerals? (There are many things other than color!)
  • Uses
  • Pictures - show us pictures and give us ideas on how to identify this mineral
  • 6 key terms relating to minerals
  • Other stuff - This seems like an after thought but, I assure you, it's not. The "other stuff" you put on your page will make the difference between a mediocre grade and an "A" (and possible extra credit). Other stuff includes things like videos, comics, or any other clever way you want to teach us.
