Gypsum information and facts
-During the paleozoic era the sea water evaporated out of the Michigan Basin and created gypsum.
-Gypsum is 79% calcium and 21% water.
-It is a non-metallic mineral and its chemical compound is CaSO42H20.
-Gypsum is normally white, but can sometimes be brown, pink, grey and almost a black.
-It is very hard to get hotter than 212 F. The earliest uses for gypsum is sculpting.
-The ancient Greeks named gypsum from Gypsos, meaning magic rock.
-Gypsum is found in nature in mineral and rock form.
-As a mineral, it can form very pretty, and sometimes extremely large, crystals.
-As a rock, gypsum is a sedimentary rock, typically found in thick beds or layers.
-You can use gypsum for wall board, some cements, plaster, and fertilizer.

GYPSUM
Gypsum is in a group of minerals called the sulfates. It is the most common of the 150 sulfates are compounds many metals with oxygen and sulfur combine together from sulfates. Ion So42 most likely gypsum is hydrous calcium sulfates because it has water in its crystal structure CaSO42H2O.
Gypsum Name
The mineral name of the gypsum is very old it is not known who made its use. It’s named from the Greek word Gypsos. Gypsos means plaster. It originally referred to the form of Gypsum. Gypsum has been heated to a high temperature to drive off the water in the crystal structure. The structure is called Plaster of Paris.

Gypsum!!!!!!!!!!!!Gypsum is found in nature in rock form. As a mineral, it can forn very pretty, and sometimes it can get really big and large. As a rock gypsum is sedimentary. It is found typically in layers. It forms in lagoons where ocean waters high in calcium and sulfates. The chemical composition of calcium sulfate is (calcium, sulfate, and oxygen) with 2 molucules of water. The chemical formula is CaSO42H2O. Gypsum has the same coposition as anhydrite. The cleavage is 1,1- micaceous. Gypsum is sqaured and very pretty. Gypsum can really be any shape but its prettiest sqaured. It is very common in North America.

Mining Gypsum
As of 1978, there were five major companies mining gypsum in Michigan. these companies/mines are located near the water, so that the low-value gypsum can be transported in bulk by ships.

vocabulary to know:paleozoic era- spanned from about 542 to 251 million years ago. sedimentary- different layers of different sediments.
hydrous- a substance that contains water.
micaceous- resembles the rock mica.
