Name: Apatite [app-a-tight]
Chemical formula: Apatite is really a group of different minerals consisting of the group formula, Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)
Individual Apatite minerals are: Fluorapatite - Ca5(PO4)3F Chlorapatite - Ca5(PO4)3Cl Hydroxyl-apatite - Ca5(PO4)3OH
Composition: Apatite group - Calcium fluoro-chloro-hydroxyl phosphate Fluorapatite - Calcium fluoro-phosphate
Chlorapatite - Calcium chloro-phosphate Hydroxyl-apatite - Basic calcium phosphate

Hardness: apatite is roughly twice the hardness of your fingernail! WOW!!!

Apatite is usually green, but, that is not it's only color!!! Apatite can also be yellow or blue it can even be a red-brown or purple. It sometimes can extend its color to be white or pink; some apatite minerals can even have multiple colors at once!!!! Apatite is in the class phosphates! Apatite is the mineral that makes up teeth in pretty much all vertebrate animals and there bones as well. The name Apatite is originated from the Greek word apatein which means "to decieve" or or "to be misleading"! Apatite can be classified as a single mineral, but Apatite usually divides into three differnt kinds of minerals. Apatite is not particularly hard but it sure as heck isn't soft! On the mineral hardness scale it measures at 5!!!!! Apatite is the main source of phosphorus.

Crystal Structure: the crystal structure of apatite is hexagonal. Although they use apatite for gemstones anything over 5 carats is not usually eye clean.

Name: The name Apatite originally came from the Greek word απατείν ("apatein")which means to deceive or be misleading as Apatite was often confused with other minerals (e.g. Beryl, Milarite).

Pegmatites: Pegmatites forms from lavas that cool down slowly and allow crystals to grow to large sizes.

Igneous rock: Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten materials. They can form beneath the earths surface, or at its surface as lava.

Hydrothermal veins: Has a sheet like body and is made of minerals that are in a rock.

Metamorphic rocks: Rocks formed from prexisting solid rocks by extreme changes in temperature, pressure, and stress.

Principal constituent: A main constituent element.
